SC20 Investment: The Benchmark for High-Quality Gold & Silver Casting

The SC20 Investment is a highly trusted product in the global jewelry casting industry, recognized as the benchmark for casting high-quality gold and silver. Formerly known as Kerr® Satin Cast*, it is ideal for creating lost-wax molds for jewelry and fine art pieces using gold, silver, and other metal alloys.

Key Features:

  • Optimal Thermal Expansion: Provides ideal thermal expansion for wax setting.
  • Versatile Formula: Its flexible formula allows for use with all types of metals and designs.
  • Composition: Primarily composed of powdered silica (quartz), cristobalite (a form of quartz), and a gypsum (calcium sulfate) binder. It contains 60-80% Silica  (Quartz & Cristobalite) and 20-40% Calcium Sulfate (Gypsum).
  • BANDUST™ Technology: Available with BANDUST™ technology to reduce respirable dust during the investing process.
  • Recommended Mixing Ratio: For optimal results, the recommended mixing ratio is 38-40 mL of water to 100g of powder.
  • Related Product: SC20 also has a thick-slurry version, SV20 investment, which is useful for larger gold/silver castings like figurines.

Mixing Instructions:

  1. Weigh investment.
  2. Measure water.
  3. Add investment to water.
  4. Mix for 3-3.5 minutes.
  5. Vacuum for 20 seconds after boil.
  6. Pour into flask.
  7. Vacuum up to 90 seconds.
  8. Let the flask sit still for 2 hours.
  9. Preheat furnace to 300F (do not preheat for multiple flasks).
  10. Remove sprue base.
  11. Load into furnace.
  12. Follow the appropriate burnout cycle.

Important Considerations:

  • Work Time: The elapsed time between adding powder to the water and thickening of investment.
  • Water Temperature: Water should be 70-75F. Colder water extends work time, while warmer water shortens it.
  • Water Quality: Use deionized (DI) or distilled water.
  • Storage: Always store investment in a dry area and close the protective bag tightly in the container when not in use.

Safety Information:

The product contains crystalline silica, which may cause cancer by inhalation and damage to lungs through prolonged or repeated exposure. Always wear protective equipment during handling and wash thoroughly after use. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for more information.

SC20 Investment is made in the USA by Ransom & Randolph.

Hannah I. ★★★★★

Mixed my first 44-pound batch for a small ring and the burnout came out flawless—no cracking, no reaction with the metal. Powder sifts clean and mixes to a smooth consistency, so the whole pour felt pretty forgiving. Glad I switched to this for my studio work.

Ryan ★★★★★

The 44-pound bag lasted me through dozens of production runs without a hitch. The investment’s consistency makes it easy to mix and apply for fine detail in silver.

Harper J. ★★★★★

I started using this for my silver casting projects and the consistency is remarkable—every pour comes out with the same smooth finish. It mixes easily and holds up well through the burn-out cycle.
